The skin of the lips does not contain melanin and therefore there is little protection against the effects of sunlight. The lips can soon become dry, chapped and sore if they are not adequately protected. Lip balms and lip creams are available which combine softening and moisturizing ingredients to prevent the lips from becoming chapped.
Uses
Lips creams may be included in the regular skin care routine if the skin is prone to dryness. As well as softening the lips, they help reduce the appearance of fine lines around the mouth. Lip creams provide a good base for lip cosmetics. Lip balms are usually provided as ‘sticks’. They are formed from a high melting point, hardened fat which provides a relatively thick protective coating for the lips, preventing skin dehydration.
